About Us

Turnstone HR is a human resources consultancy based in the the Lake District. We cover the whole of the North West, from Cumbria to Lancashire and everything in between (and sometimes beyond!), including Barrow-in-Furness, Dalton, Ulverston, Kendal, Penrith, and Lancaster.

From assistance with Employment Law, creating Contracts of Employment, Employee Handbooks, Handling Disciplinary and Grievance Issues, Redundancies, Capability and Performance Issues, Conducting Appraisals, we are here to help.

Our aim is to provide a personal, hands on and cost-effective human resource service to local businesses. Our clients range from building societies, manufacturing companies, care providers, charities and even professional sports clubs.

No matter how diverse the companies are that we work with, our ethos remains the same. We want to provide as many businesses as possible with a custom HR service that will leave them secure, confident and protected, without the added cost of employing an in-house HR expert.

Sarah Goddard – MCIPD

Sarah Goddard – MCIPD

Sarah works directly with businesses, providing face to face advice and support when they most need it.

Having qualified with a BSc in Economics and an MBA from Lancaster University she went on to gain a post-graduate Diploma in Personnel Management at the University of Westminster.

Sarah has over 25 years of HR experience and her previous roles include working as site HR Manager for multinational pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline and personal care corporation Kimberly Clark.

Away from work, Sarah enjoys Zumba and Yoga and is a massive fan of Strictly Come Dancing. As well as being mum to two beautiful sons, she is a qualified counsellor supporting Action for Children and a charity close to home – Furness Carers.

Chrissy Tait – MCIPD

Chrissy Tait – MCIPD

Chrissy works directly with our clients, giving them expert advice and support based on her 30 years of experience in the HR industry.

She has worked in the retail and manufacturing sectors, holding senior HR roles with Robert McBride Ltd and GlaxoSmithKline and has a broad variety of skills as well as previous experience in developing positive employee relations.

Chrissy is a keen follower of BarrowAFC and Manchester United – born from an early admiration of George Best in his heyday!

Over the years she has held various voluntary roles, including being a school and college governor and chair of a local disability charity and was appointed as a magistrate in early 2019.

She enjoys travel and family activities, especially with her young grandson, as well as reading and sewing, when time allows.

David Nicholson, MCIPD

David Nicholson, MCIPD

David became an independent HR consultant in early 2022 and began working for Turnstone HR later that year.

He gained a BA in Business and Finance, and then completed a post graduate diploma in Personnel Management at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN).

David has worked in the manufacturing and public sectors in a wide variety of HR roles for more than 30 years, including Group HR Director. He has held senior positions with BAE Systems, James Cropper, and South Lakeland District Council. He has a broad range of skills and experience in HR and communications and is a Chartered member of the CIPD.

He has been a Chelsea fan since 1970. He also has a real passion for horse racing and has visited all 59 racecourses in Britain.

David is married with two children, and enjoys travelling and working with new people.

Lizy is our HR Assistant and supports the team in both the administrative and creative needs of the company.

Having studied in both Edinburgh and Düsseldorf, Germany in the 80’s she gained a degree in Business Administration with languages.

Lizy’s career spans over 25 years including working in Business Systems Administration for Reuters plc. Then moving on to Project Management she worked for Standard Life Insurance both in Edinburgh and later in Frankfurt, Germany, launching life insurance products onto the German market.

Currently working self-employed from home, and on a free lance basis with Turnstone HR, she also enjoys the tranquility of nature, the beautiful island of La Gomera, hiking, reading, salsa dancing and supporting her ever-growing son.

Nicki James

We are delighted to welcome Nicky James to Turnstone HR! Nicky started with us at the beginning of May 2024 and comes with a wealth of HR knowledge and experience.

Nicki provides HR support and advice to clients drawing on the generalist experience she has gained across a variety of sectors including manufacturing, tourism, SMEs and local government, most recently with Westmorland and Furness Council.

She studied Modern Foreign Languages at Manchester University and started her HR career on the Metal Box graduate scheme. She gained the CIPD qualification at that stage and more recently has studied for the level 7 Advanced Award in Employment Law.

An HR generalist, Nicki has particular strengths in employee relations and the use of employment law as a problem-solving tool for people management challenges. She also enjoys working on policies and procedures to ensure compliance and has a thorough, “eye for detail” approach.

She is married with two grown-up sons and her interests include cinema, travelling, hill walking and smartphone photography. She is also a history enthusiast and enjoys going to history festivals and online talks, reading history books (both fiction and non-fiction), and watching documentaries. She likes seeing stand-up comedians and has seen a lot of the big names at various venues across the local area as well as further afield in Manchester and Liverpool.
