Barrow AFC Community Board
Turnstone is proud to be well represented on the new Barrow AFC Community Board. Both Rob and myself have been invited to work with the club on this exciting project.
Rob was asked to Chair the new Board, the aim of which is for Barrow AFC “to become the leading community club in the country through the provision of high quality community support, which will raise aspiration and support economic success for all”.
The main objective of the Board is to grow the number of opportunities for the local community with increased participation in education and sporting programmes, whilst at the same time promoting a healthy lifestyle and social well being.
Barrow AFC Directors Keith Allen and John Mackay are the club representatives on the Board. Other Board members have been drawn from local educationalists, Sports Council and local funding experts and include Barrow Borough Council’s Sports Development Officer, Chris Athersmith; Derek Brook, Area Engagement Officer of Cumbria County Council; Barrow AFC Player and Youth Team Specialist, Robin Hulbert; Gill Jepson, who manages the Bluebirds Study Centre; Val Robinson of Furness Enterprise; Barrow AFC Community Officer, Craig Rutherford; and Victoria Junior School Head Teacher, Caroline Vernon.
The Community Board will oversee and provide governance to the Club’s community function. Barrow AFC is keen to promote this aspect of the Club and the new Committee is working closely with the Education Centre (Bluebirds Study Support Centre) and the Community Officer.
Rob said ‘being a massive Barrow AFC supporter, I had no hesitation whatsoever but to take on this challenging role. We have already submitted some applications for funding which we hope will be successful. I certainly hope that we can make Barrow AFC a very strong community club respected throughout the world of football and perceived as a model to follow.’
Barrow AFC Director, Tony Keen is excited about the Community Board and stated that ‘the creation of this Board is critical to the long term sustainability strategy of the Club and with the strength of the individuals within this team, the future looks fantastic.’
