Introduced in 2000, IR35 is the anti tax avoidance rule that applies to all contractors and freelancers who do not fall under HMRC’s definition of being self-employed.
It has been announced this week (17 March 2020) that the date for implementation of these new tax measures, which planned to make organisations responsible for determining whether a contractor carrying out work for them should be treated as an employee for tax purposes, has been postponed for twelve months and will now come into effect on 6 April 2021.
It should be noted that this is a deferral, not a cancellation, and that the government is still committed to introducing the policy.
It’s not something that is going to go away.
