Supporting Barrow AFC and Good Honest Football
As many will know, Turnstone is one of the Sponsors of Barrow AFC. Supporting Barrow is a real roller coaster of emotions. Only three weeks ago, we were reaching for the oxygen masks and talking about scaling the dizzy heights of the play-off places.
Now, after four successive defeats we’ve been brought back down to earth with a big bump and to add to our woes, both of our goalkeepers are out injured having been stretchered off in games in January and March respectively. We’ve had to bring in a 21 year old from Macclesfield as cover until the end of the season.
Nevertheless, it’s great fun (most of the time!) and there is a real passion about the place whether we’re talking about the supporters, the players, the coaching staff or the Board and staff that run the club from day to day.
Rarely on the pitch do we witness players diving or rolling around in mock agony; managers brandishing imaginary cards on the touchline or players surrounding the referee to argue decisions.
It is good, honest football. Football played the way it was meant to be played; they way it was played when I was growing up on the terraces at Anfield in the glory days of the Seventies. There are few, if any, prima donnas and it is for these reasons that I have become disillusioned with Premier League football and spend my time and money supporting Barrow.
It’s also a great way to entertain friends and clients alike and pretty much without exception, everyone has a really great time. At a recent game, one of our clients, Glen Richardson of Ginicam, won £50 as first prize in the raffle, rounding off his evening nicely.
Turnstone is entertaining a group of 30 on Easter Monday for the home tie against west coast rivals Southport. With three games taking place before then, let’s hope the team can recover the fantastic form that has seen at least a very respectable mid-table finish – the best in the four seasons in the top flight of non-league football.
We want to extract revenge on Southport for their 2-1 victory over us on August Bank Holiday at their place!! And last but not least, as Man of the Match Sponsors for the game, we want to have plenty of great individual performances to agonise over and to round the day off with a cheery presentation of the bottle of bubbly!
