Turnstone Are Match Sponsors At Fleetwood Town
On 10th January 2012, Turnstone took a party of friends and clients to watch Barrow AFC’s away game at Fleetwood Town. I hired a minibus and, being the only tee-total in the party, was happy to drive the round trip to Fleetwood’s Highbury Stadium.
It is clear that Fleetwood have put money into the club and the hospitality facilities in the new stand were as good as any experienced at top level football over the years.
Having ‘murdered’ Fleetwood 4-0 at our own Furness Building Society Stadium on a balmy night in August the Bluebirds were out to do the double over their north-west rivals. Hmmmm, not quite how it worked out in reality! A convincing 4-1 trouncing was perhaps still somewhat generous to a very under par Barrow team on the night.
Part of the Match Sponsor’s package was to pick the Man of the Match – and according to tradition, this is always a ‘home’ player. It’s fair to say that the performance of the Barrow players that night would have made it difficult for us to have tried to break the rules!
Accordingly, having adjudged Jamie Vardy (scorer of two goals and no doubt soon to become a top flight player) as Man of the Match, I went through to make the presentation. Proudly wearing my Barrow scarf, I presented Jamie with a bottle of bubbly and, in return, received a signed match ball. However, I couldn’t resist saying to Jamie as he presented the bubbly, “good performance tonight but it’s 5-4 on aggregate this season!”
